Backstory

The player takes on the role of Ethan Cole, an American agent returning from a mission in Taiwan. During his journey home, his ship is mysteriously attacked and sinks, stranding him on what appears to be a deserted island. However, the island is secretly controlled by Russian forces, who are experimenting on immortal soldiers using an Egyptian artifact. One of their experiments goes horribly wrong, leading to the creation of a mutated abomination. The player must explore the island, unravel the mystery, survive against both soldiers and monstrous creatures, and escape.

My reflection on the project

I'm incredibly proud of what I've accomplished with this project. It challenged me technically, but also in storytelling and level design. I feel I've grown as a developer, and it motivates me immensely to create even bigger projects in the future. Combining horror and strategy, in particular, turned out to be right up my alley.

Conclusion

Blackout: Island 37 has become not only a game project for me, but also a personal growth journey. I learned a tremendous amount about pathfinding, animations, game loop design, first-person mechanics, and storytelling, but perhaps even more about collaboration, incorporating feedback, and critically evaluating my own work.

The combination of tension, exploration, and strategic gameplay makes this game unique. Despite the technical challenges, I'm proud of the result, and I already see plenty of opportunities to improve even further in future projects.
